CHAPTER 29

The Accident

I knew something was wrong when the doorbell rang at three in the morning, just like I had known something was wrong when Mr. Jennings came to my house after school. Why would the CEO of the oil company my dad worked at stop by our house when he knew Dad was at work? Those thoughts were just as clear to me today as they had been eight months ago.

The doorbell rang again. I felt afraid. “Gloria,” I whispered, feeling for her next to me. Oh my God, Gloria wasn’t home. She was still out with Cooper. I wanted to kill her. I went to get Luke, who was already up out of bed slipping on his pants. Amber Lee was a sound sleeper. The doorbell’s ringing didn’t startle her, nor did Luke’s movement and the sound his belt buckle made when it accidentally clanked against the nightstand.

As we hastened ourselves to the front door before another chime rang, I noticed cop car lights flashing through the foyer windows. I panicked, falling back on the third bottom stair. I clasped my head in my hands. I didn’t want to look up when Luke opened the door to the police officers—but I did. One officer had a buzz cut, and the other was very tall—about six five.

Buzz Cut asked, “Is this the home of Dakota Buchannan?”

I immediately prayed out loud quietly, shaking in disbelief, “Oh my God. Please, dear Lord, not again.”

Luke nodded to the officers but remained quiet. I could see sweat forming on the back of his neck, just below his hairline.

The other officer said, “There’s been an accident. A Mr. Travis Bernard Kenwood was rushed to Memorial Hospital. You can come with us in the cruiser—or we’ll escort you in your own car.”

“How bad … what about his girlfriend?” Luke asked, sounding almost breathless.

“The female in the car.” He hesitated, “She seemed to be—well, she was able to talk and sit up when we left, but that’s all I observed,” Buzz Cut confirmed.

The tall one added, looking at his notes, “A Miss Pamela Mendez, also taken to Memorial. We are trying to get in contact with her mother and daughter.”

Luke informed them, “Her daughter’s four. She’s with us. Her mom’s in Las Vegas. She doesn’t have a cell phone. She’s staying at the MGM Grand.”

I finally spoke. “How bad … how bad is my uncle?”

“I can’t really say. It looked as though he has sustained injuries. He was rushed to Memorial. That is all I know. I’m sorry, ma’am,” Buzz Cut formally stated.

Ma’am! Do I look like a ma’am? I’m seventeen years old, for God’s sake! I wanted to scream, just like I wanted to scream at the funeral directors: Open that casket and let me see my dad! But it wasn’t their fault my dad was burned to death, just like it wasn’t the officers’ fault for being the bearer of bad news—they were just doing their jobs. Instead I asked, “And the driver—what’s wrong
